How to software mirroring in windows 2000

At June 14, 2007 at 3:51 PM , Blogger Rajnish said...

SUMMARY
This step-by-step article describes how to mirror the system and boot partition on a Windows 2000 Server. This scenario is based on the assumption that the system and boot files are on disk 0 and disk 1 is unallocated space.

Requirements
• At least two hard disk drives; IDE, SCSI, or mixed architecture is permissible.
• The second drive needs to be at least the size of the volume on which the operating system boot and system files reside to permit mirroring.
• The Windows 2000 system and boot files need to be together on the same volume to be mirrored.

Set Up the Disk Management System
1. Right-click My Computer , and then click Manage to open the Computer Management tool.
2. Expand the Storage node.
3. Click Disk Management.
4. On the View menu, point to Top, and then click to select Disk List. In the right pane, the attributes of each disk in the system are displayed.
5. On the View menu, point to Bottom, and then click to select Graphical View. At the bottom of the right pane, a color-coded graphical view of the disks on the system is displayed:• Disk description panel: The disk description panel, which is gray, is located to the left of the volume description, which is in color. The disk description contains information about each disk's disk number, basic or dynamic configuration, its size, and online or offline status.
• Volume description panel: The volume description panels are color-coded. They hold information on each volume such as the drive letter (if assigned), allocated or unallocated, the partition or volume size, and the health status of the volume.

Upgrade to Dynamic Disks
Raid systems require Dynamic disks under Windows 2000. Any disks that you are upgrading must contain at least 1 megabyte (MB) of free space at the end of the disk for the upgrade to succeed. Disk Management automatically reserves this free space when creating partitions or volumes on a disk, but disks with partitions or volumes that are created by other operating systems may not have this free space available.

NOTE: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

To upgrade a basic disk to a dynamic disk: 1. Before you upgrade disks, close any programs that are running on those disks.
2. Right-click the gray disk description panel, and then click Upgrade to Dynamic Disk.
3. If the second disk in not a dynamic disk, follow these steps to upgrade it to a dynamic disk.

Mirror the Boot and System Volume
In this scenario, disk 1 is the disk on which the image of disk 0 will be mirrored.

NOTE: Partitions are referred to as volumes when the disks are dynamic. 1. Disk 1 must be unallocated space before you can proceed with mirroring.
2. Right-click disk 0, which contains the boot and system files, and then click Add Mirror.
3. A dialog box opens in which any disk on your system that is available for mirroring will be displayed. Under Select a disk to use as the mirrored space for Boot and System, select the disk of your choice (in this example, it is Disk 1), and then click Add Mirror.

Both Disk 0 and Disk 1 will now have the same color code, the same drive letter, and the volumes will have the status note "Regenerating" displayed while the information is being copied from the first disk to the second disk. The volume of the new mirror will automatically be sized by the system to the same size as that of the original boot and system volume.
4. After you receive the following message, click OK to acknowledge it:
DISK MANAGEMENT
You have mirrored your boot volume. To be able to boot from the mirrored disk, add the appropriate entry to the boot.ini file.
5. If you now want to boot from the new mirrored disk, you have to change the Boot.ini ARC path that points the computer to the partition in which the system files are located.

Troubleshooting
After you upgrade a basic disk to a dynamic disk, any existing partitions on the basic disk become (dynamic) simple volumes. You cannot change the dynamic volumes back to partitions.

Dynamic disk cannot contain partitions or logical drives, nor can it be accessed by MS-DOS or by any Windows operating systems other than Windows 2000.

Dear Vishnoo,

Yes this is possible but u need a static IP which resolve your ftp server. If u have a net connection without static IP then u want to your dynamic IP every time & then u are able to connect your FTP server.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of damaged random access memory (RAM) modules or a damaged RAM slot.

Back to the top

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods, as necessary:

Remove one or more of the RAM modules in your computer, leaving at least the minimum amount of RAM required for Windows XP installation. If this resolves the issue, either replace these modules with new RAM modules or reinsert them after Setup is completed.

NOTE: Verify that your computer's performance is not affected when you reinsert the old RAM modules.

-or-

Install the RAM modules into different (unused) RAM slots in your computer.

-or-

If you still experience problems before or after Setup, replace all of your computer's RAM modules with new RAM modules.

Thanks,
Rajnish

If too many files are copied to the root folder of a boot volume that uses the NTFS file system, you may receive the following error message the next time that you restart the computer:

NTLDR is missing
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

If the MFT root folder contains many files, the MFT may become so fragmented that an additional allocation index is created. Because files are mapped alphabetically in the allocation indexes, the NTLDR file may be pushed to the second allocation index. When this occurs, you receive the error message

Method 1: Use a Boot Disk to Start the Computer

1. Create a Windows 2000 boot disk that contains the following files:
Ntldr
Ntdetect.com
Boot.ini
Ntbootdd.sys

2. Modify the Boot.ini file to point to the correct hard disk controller and to the correct volume for your Windows installation.

3. Insert the boot disk into the computer's floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer.

4. Copy the Ntldr file, the Ntdetect.com file, and the Boot.ini file from the boot disk to the system partition of the local hard disk.

Method 2: Use the Recovery Console

1. Use the Windows 2000 Setup disks to restart the computer, or use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to restart the computer.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows 2000 installation.

3. Press C to repair the Windows 2000 installation by using the Recovery Console.

4. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.

5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.

6. Type map, and then press ENTER. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
7. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after you type each one, where drive is the drive letter that you typed in step 4 of "Method 2: Use the Recovery Console," of this article:
copy drive:\i386\ntldr c:\

copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: In these commands, there is a space between the ntldr and c:\, and between ntdetect.com and c:\.
8. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
type c:\Boot.ini
A list similar to the following list appears: [boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
If you receive the following message, the Boot.ini file may be missing or damaged:
The system cannot find the file or directory specified.
9. If the Boot.ini file is missing or damaged, create a new one. To do so, follow these steps: a. Use a text editor, such as Notepad or Edit.com, to create a boot loader file similar to the following boot loader file:[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
b. Save the file to a floppy disk as Boot.ini.

NOTE: If you used Notepad to create the file, make sure that the .txt extension is not appended to the Boot.ini file name.
c. Type the following command at the Recovery Console command prompt to copy the Boot.ini file from the floppy disk to the computer:
copy a:\Boot.ini c:\

10. Type exit, and then press ENTER. The computer restarts.

Method 3: Use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM

1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and start Windows 2000 Setup.
2. On the Welcome to Setup page, press R.
3. On the Windows 2000 Repair Options page, press R.
4. When you are prompted to select one of the repair options, press M.
5. Press the UP ARROW, press the UP ARROW again, to select Verify Windows 2000 system files, and then press ENTER to clear the selection.
6. Press the DOWN ARROW to select Continue (perform selected tasks), and then press ENTER. The following message appears:
You need an Emergency Repair disk for the Windows 2000
installation you want to repair.
7. Do one of the following, as appropriate to your situation: • If you have an Emergency Repair Disk, follow these steps:
a. Press ENTER.
b. Insert the Emergency Repair Disk into the computer's floppy disk drive, and then press ENTER.
c. Follow the instructions to repair the installation, and then restart the computer.
-or-
• If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, follow these steps:
a. Press L. You receive a message similar to the following:
Setup has found Windows 2000 in the following folder:
drive:\WINNT "Microsoft Windows 2000"
b. Press ENTER.

Setup examines the disks, and then completes the repair process.

If Setup Cannot Locate Windows 2000
If you do not have a Windows 2000 Emergency Repair Disk, and if Setup cannot locate the Windows 2000 installation, follow these steps:
1. Start Windows 2000 Setup.
2. On the Setup will install Windows 2000 on partition page, select Leave the current file system intact (no changes), and then press ENTER.
3. Press ESC to install Windows 2000 to a new folder.
4. In the Select the folder in which the files should be copied box, type \tempwin, and then press ENTER.

Setup installs a new copy of Windows 2000.
5. Log on to the new copy of Windows 2000.
6. Click Start, and then click Run.
7. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
8. At the command prompt, type drive:, where drive is the boot drive of the computer, and then press ENTER. For example, type c:, and then press ENTER.
9. Type attrib -h -r -s Boot.ini, and then press ENTER.
10. Type edit Boot.ini, and then press ENTER.

Edit.com opens a Boot.ini file that is similar to the following file:[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\TEMPWIN
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\TEMPWIN="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

11. Replace all instances of TEMPWIN with WINNT. The Boot.ini file that appears is similar to the following file:[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

12. Press ALT+F, and then press S.
13. Press ALT+F, and then press X.
14. Type attrib +h +r +s Boot.ini, and then press ENTER.
15. Type exit to quit the command prompt.
16. Restart the computer.
17. At the start screen Please select the operating system ,use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows 2000, and then press ENTER.
18. Start Windows Explorer, locate the following folders, and then delete them:

The IP address you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter

The IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter Name of adapter. Name of adapter is hidden from the network and Dial-up Connections folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a legacy adapter that is not working. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result in incorrect system configuration. Do you want to enter a different IP address for this adapter in the list of IP addresses in the advanced dialog box?

CAUSE

A network adapter with the same IP address is in the registry but is hidden in Device Manager. This can occur when you move a network card from one PCI slot to another PCI slot.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, uninstall the ghosted network adapter from the registry using the following methods:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
2. Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1, and then press ENTER.
3. Type Start DEVMGMT.MSC, and then press ENTER.
4. Click View, and then click Show Hidden Devices.
5. Expand the Network Adapters tree.
6. Right-click the dimmed network adapter, and then click Uninstall.

Restart the computer and try now.

Problem : Windows file sharing complains: logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon" (from the client) and I can't fine the 'Security' tab in the properties windows to change stuff (on the server).

Solution : First one needs to switch off 'simple file sharing' from Explorer in "Tools" menu - "Folder Options" - "View". The you go to "Sharing" tab in the shared directory Properties and change the 'Permissions' so that the users you want can access the share. Also make sure the user is (or is a member of a group) in Local Security Policy tool (Admin Tools) under "User Right Assignment" for "Access this computer from the network". Note that the Everyone group doesn't provide full access for Everyone - it seems to provide 'guest' access, which isn't sufficient in the case of User's docs directories.
